Mission Statemenmt
Meeting people where they are with the love of Christ to encourage them to salvation and disciple them in the faith for the glory of Christ our Lord.
Brief History
Immanuel Baptist Church was started as a mission work of Temple Baptist Church in Moundsville, WV. The first meetings in 1969 were, Revival Services and VBS held in a tent on a lot along route 2 in New Martinsville. Then Bible Study Fellowships were held in a local home.
In March 1970, Sunday School and Worship Services for Immanuel Baptist Chapel began in the War Memorial Building on Main Street, New Martinsville, with Mike Minear as Mission pastor, then in January 1971 Floyd Tidsworth became the pastor. In the early years Revival Services and VBS were held in various areas throughout Wetzel County.
In 1971 a lot in a residential neighborhood was purchased and a mobile home was placed on the lot for the meeting place. In 1972 Buddy Beam became the pastor. In 1973 the current building was erected. The main structure of the building is logs that were donated by Jim Watkins and his business partner of Pagosa, Colorado. The logs make the building very recognizable when giving people information and directions for finding the building and the location of the building.
In 1973 Dave Kazmarkski was called to be the pastor. During Dave’s time at Immanuel the church was chartered as Immanuel Baptist Church. In 1981 Bob Phylen was called to be the pastor, and in 1985 Charlie Harris was called to pastor the church. During Charlie’s time at Immanuel an addition that contains office area, restrooms, class room, nursery, and fellowship hall was added to the building.
In 1994 William “Dub” Henderson was call to pastor the church. Dub had to resign in 1996 due to health issues. In 1997 Bruce Taylor was called to be the pastor. Bruce is retiring in 2022. During Bruce’s ministry at Immanuel, the mortgage was paid off, the parking lot was paved, a shelter was donated and built along the side of the building, the interior of the sanctuary (worship center) has been completely renovated, and other improvements, new metal roof, more insulation, some lighting improvements, log maintenance, and other improvements, have been made to keep the building in good condition.
